CBD and women… what’s the relevance? Before we dive into CBD’s benefits for women, let’s get some groundwork going on. Did you know that in any given year, approximately 30–40% of adults in the U.S. report symptoms of insomnia, about 20% report symptoms of depression, and 18% report symptoms of anxiety? Yep, that’s right. Moreover, it might come as a surprise that with all of the above conditions, the prevalence is higher among women. Why is this?
Young women experience depression at practically twice the rate of men. A 2015 review on the gender disparity surrounding depression suggested that many of the hormonal changes women undergo can trigger depression — in fact, it is at the start of puberty when women are most at risk for developing depression, whereas risk factors among different genders remain very similar beforehand. In addition, the review notes that there are several societal factors and inherent gender differences that could contribute to this gap.
Similarly, anxiety occurs in women at almost twice the rate of men, which is also partially due to a difference in hormones as well as various gender differences in common behavior and coping mechanisms.
Finally, insomnia is yet another condition more common in women than men. A 2014 study examined gender differences in sleeping issues, finding that not only are sleep disorders more prevalent in woman than men, but women suffer more with issues such as falling and staying asleep.
Currently, the COVID-19 situation has spurred an influx of stress and uncertainty — considering the way in which this global situation has shifted everyday life, it makes sense that anxiety, depression, and insomnia rates have all risen. Furthermore, given the significant gender gap within all of these conditions, it is crucial that more research be conducted with the intent of facilitating women in coping.
CBD, the hemp cousin of marijuana, has been found to be a remedy for all of the conditions mentioned above. On top of that, CBD has the potential to benefit women specifically in other ways such as as relieving cramps, curing acne, and facilitating with bloating and mood swings.
A 2019 study examining the role of CBD in managing insomnia and anxiety found that CBD could be beneficial to those suffering from insomnia — in the study, anxiety scores in the majority of participants decreased after using CBD for one month. In addition, in 66% of participants, sleep scores improved over the first month. A 2018 study on CBD’s efficacy found that most commonly, CBD was used for managing pain.
As noted above, Women are more at risk for developing insomnia, anxiety, and depression — furthermore, stresses manifested by COVID-19 likely them even more vulnerable. For women finding themselves developing severe symptoms, CBD could be a solvent. CBD’s anti-anxiety and anti-inflammatory properties may also help with managing various symptoms throughout ones menstrual cycle. During this cycle, women frequently experience what is known as premenstrual syndrome, or PMS. Some of the common symptoms of PMS are mood swings, irritability, loss of sex drive, and cramping. In addition, women sometimes develop greasy hair and acne. Given the multitude of research supporting CBD usage and its expansive benefits surrounding anxiety and inflammation, women in particular could benefit immensely from experimenting with CBD.
