How & Why Does CBD Help With Anxiety?

Over 40 million adults in America suffer from an anxiety disorder, making it the most common mental illness in the nation. Only about a third of those people recieve anxiety treatment, largely due to the financial burden of treatment or the short- and long-term effects associated with anxiety medication.

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a perpetual state of panic that is induced by the brain’s response to stress. Anxiety has many sources, including but not limited to genetic predisposition, environmental factors and everyday life triggers. 

One of the most frequent causes of anxiety is chronic stress. The brain’s stress response is a biological reaction to outside factors that are seen as a threat. Back in the day, before modern technology or even language, our brains adapted this stress response as a means to survive. The brain releases small bouts of stress hormones, including the hormone cortisol, to signal a “fight or flight” situation at hand. Back in the day, this biological response would be us useful and arguably necessary for survival.

However, today’s modern generation has normalized a high-stress lifestyle, despite the toll it takes on the mind and body. Frequently experiencing chronic stress and/or anxiety can cause detrimental problems to your health and even alter the brain both chemically and structurally. Certain regions of the brain become hyperactive, others shrink, and neurotransmitters/receptors are altered as a result of frequent, chronic stress. Anxiety and chronic stress can also cause health problems that include depression, digestive issues, heart disease, poor immune system function, muscle aches, abnormal weight fluctuation, fatigue, and endocannabinoid imbalance. 

In sum, anxiety is oftentimes the result of chronic stress, which can  take substantial tolls on your health and wellbeing. Furthermore, nearly a quarter of US adults have some form of an anxiety disorder, and of those people only about a third have found aid or treatment. 

 

CBD's Role In Anxiety Management

CBD modifies the CB1 and CB2 receptors in the brain (rather than bind to them as most cannabinoids do. CBD’s effect on these receptors helps bring balance to the body and regulates body functions including stress response. In this way, CBD may help reduce anxiety levels when a stress response is triggered.

-Research/Evidence: One study conducted on rodents that were trained in extinction learning found that the rats were less likely to freeze up in anticipation for an electric shock after being administered CBD. Another research study conducted on people evidenced that those who took CBD before public speaking were less apprehensive to speak and improved their performance anxiety. 

2) CBD combats anxiety by modifying neurotransmitter systems as well as neural regeneration.

-How?:  The 5-HT1A serotonin receptor is said to be primarily responsible for anxiety disorders, and CBD specifically binds to this receptor. Furthermore, CBD directly affects the endocannabinoid system(ECS) in our bodies, which is prone to dysfunction when under chronic stress or anxiety. CBD helps to regulate the normal function of the ECS, thus relieving feelings of anxiousness. Finally, CBD may promote neural regeneration by stimulating the growth of new neurons.

-Research/Evidence: One study found that CBD dramatically reduced the anxiety in chronically-stressed mice. Another study done on animal models found that CBD interacts with the ECS in a way that relieves OCD and other anxious behaviors.
