How Is Cannabidiol Different From Marijuana

For a long time, cannabis has primarily been associated with ‘stoner’ culture and getting high. Not anymore! The wellness world is abuzz with the benefits of cannabis and this trend is only gaining more and more momentum. However, cannabis is a very broad term. It includes hemp, marijuana, and chemical compounds such as cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). People often tend to use many of these words interchangeably. It is CBD in particular that has become a hot topic in wellness, with a spectrum of CBD products available in the market: chocolates, beauty serums, cleansing body bars, and even CBD gummy bears. So how exactly are marijuana and CBD different from each other?

Cannabidiol is a non-psychoactive chemical compound found in the cannabis plant. CBD cannot get you high. The psychoactive element that causes the sensation of getting high is THC.

Usually, CBD is extracted from hemp. Hemp is a specific type of cannabis plant that has less than 0.3% THC content. On the other hand, marijuana contains approximately 12% THC content. This is the reason that CBD and marijuana have very different effects on people. For instance, CBD is often used to treat anxiety and depression. It can cause people to calm down. However, THC can cause paranoia, which is definitely not a desirable consequence.

Owing to their differing effects, the rules and regulations surrounding CBD and marijuana are also different. In the United States, recreational marijuana is legal in eleven states, with Illinois being the latest state to legalize it effective 1 January 2020.

The legality of CBD is a bit of a grey area. The 2018 Farm Bill legalized the growth and sale of hemp across the US. If the CBD products are made from low or zero-THC hemp, the products can be bought legally. For CBD products that are marketed as having therapeutic benefits or as a dietary supplement, it is mandatory to have the product reviewed and approved by the FDA.

Therefore, keep in mind that CBD and marijuana, despite falling under the common umbrella of cannabis, are not identical and have different laws governing their sale and consumption. It is always best to identify what the laws in your state in particular are.
