The ABC’s of CBD: The Must-Know Words of CBD, Starting With A-J.

Glossaries are great. They help you unravel all those big words used in big books so that the book itself makes sense.

Say hello to a cousin of “the glossary“: The ABC’s of CBD! Seabedee has compiled an alphabetical list of CBD-related terms for you to gain a better understanding of the CBD industry lingo. Not only will you have a stronger vocabulary, but also more knowledge about CBD and the industry as a whole.

CBD Glossary Part 1: CBD Terminology, A-J Words:

  • A:
    • 2-AG: This endocannabinoid is the most abundant one in the human body! 2-AG is part of a group of molecules that work to maintain proper body function, including the immune system’s function, appetite, sensuality, inflammation and pain management.
    • Allosteric Modulator: CBD is an allosteric modulator, meaning that it either amplifies or reduces the signal given off by a receptor by changing its shape. For example, CBD is a  “positive allosteric modulator” of the GABA-A receptor, meaning that it works by changing the GABA-A receptor’s shape in order to amplify it’s effects. GABA-A induces a calm, relaxed feeling, which is why CBD is recognized for its anti-anxiety properties.
    • Anti-Inflammatory: CBD is popularly known for its anti-inflammatory properties, meaning it helps reduce inflammation in the body, thus relieving pain. Inflammation is the body’s natural protective response to harm or irritants, which is a good thing. But prolonged inflammation in the body is painful, and it can damage tissues and organs over time. A 2015 review found that CBD inhibited inflammation through multiple pathways in the body, and may be effective at aiding arthritis, IBS, IBD, nervous tissue inflammation and even some types of cancer that are triggered by inflammation in the body.
  • B:
    • Broad Spectrum: Broad spectrum CBD is cannabidiol that has been extracted from the hemp plant along with all the other naturally-occurring compounds EXCEPT for THC.
    • Bioavailability: CBD bioavailability is the term used to describe how much cannabidiol is absorbed into your bloodstream, which is largely determined by the product type and method of administration.
  • C:
    • Cannabinoids: These chemical compounds are produced naturally in the human body as well as in some plants. In the human body cannabinoids are referred to as endocannabinoids, and the ones that plants have are called phytocannabinoids. CBD is a phytocannabinoid found in the hemp plant, alongside about 113 other cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant.
    • C.O.A.: This abbreviation stands for Certificate of Analysis, and every reputable CBD product should have one of these on the label. The C.O.A. is conducted at a third-party lab to test a CBD product’s cannabinoid content. Every batch of product should be sent for lab testing to get a C.O.A. because it affirms customers that the product has the proper amount of CBD and other compounds in it.
    • CO2 Extraction: CO2 extraction method is one of the several ways that CBD can be extracted from the hemp plant. CO2 is boasted for being one of the best CBD extraction processes because it is safe, clean and efficient (although the machinery is quite expensive). The CO2 extraction process utilizes pressurized carbon dioxide to pull CBD and other desired compounds out of the hemp plant. Here at Seabedee we only use the solventless CO2 extraction method to ensure the highest quality CBD, with zero risk of contamination.
    • Cannabidiol: Cannabidiol is CBD! CBD was discovered in 1940, belongs to the cannabinoid family, and has the chemical formula: C21H30O2. All of Seabedee’s products are made with hemp-derived cannabidiol.
  • D:
    • Dose: The dose of CBD you take describes how much CBD you administer or consume, which is based on a user’s individual needs, lifestyle and biological traits. Oftentimes, CBD products include a suggested starting dose on the package to assist user’s in their dosing decisions. Seabedee includes a “SUGGESTED USE” section on our product packages, such as on our Premium CBD Oil packages.
    • Delta-9 Tetrahydrocannabinol: Pi-Delta-Gamma Fraternity? Nope. But you may in fact find some delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol there… This cannabinoid is more commonly known as THC, and it is the psychoactive ingredient found in cannabis. In order for a CBD product to be legal, the THC content must never exceed 0.3%. Full Spectrum CBD Products contain 0.3% or less THC in them, but do not induce psychoactive effects due to the insignificant content of THC.
  • E:
    • Endocannabinoid System(ECS): The ECS is a vital signalling system found in both humans and animals. It works to maintain proper function and homeostasis in the body, and regulates things like metabolism, pain experience, immune system function, neuron activity and more. The ECS has two primary receptors: CB1(responsible for coordination & movement, hunger, pain, mood regulation, memory, etc.) and CB2(influences inflammation and pain in the body). CBD interacts with our endocannabinoid system by influencing the CB1 and CB2 receptors to induce medicinal benefits.
    • Entourage Effect: The saying, “teamwork makes the dream work” could easily become the slogan for the entourage effect. This theory, which is backed by substantial research, claims that the health benefits/effects of CBD are maximized when CBD is extracted and consumed with all the naturally-occurring cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. Such would be the case with Full Spectrum CBD because it includes every and all of the plant’s compounds.
    • Epilepsy: This neurological disorder is the fourth most common of its kind, effects a variety of age groups, and causes people to have unpredictable seizures. CBD has been found to be effective at treating people with epilepsy, and has even been FDA approved in one epilepsy medication, Epidiolex.
  • F:
    • Full Spectrum: Full spectrum CBD, also known as whole plant CBD, is the most natural form that CBD comes in because it includes all of the compounds found in the hemp plant alongside CBD. Full-spectrum extracts maintain the full profile of the cannabis plant and contain cannabinoids such as THC, CBD, CBG, and CBN, as well as terpenes and flavonoids.
    • Flavonoids: Flavonoids make up about 10% of the compounds found in cannabis, and is also found in most fruits and vegetables. Flavonoids provide a variety of benefits to the plant’s protection and reproduction, as we as its scent, taste, color and flavor. Furthermore, flavonoids are thought to provide health benefits: Research has evidenced that flavonoids may have antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as protective benefits to the nervous and cardiovascular systems.
    • Farm Bill of 2018: This bill, which was signed by President Trump, extends policy for agricultural and nutritional farming to include legal cultivation of hemp. More specifically, this bill legalized CBD across the U.S., with some rules and regulations of course. All of Seabedee’s products are Farm Bill compliant.
  • G:
    • Gummies (CBD): CBD Gummies are edibles, or foods infused with CBD. Gummies are one of the most popular forms of CBD edibles, and Seabedee offers two delicious options: Sour Neon CBD Gummies and CBD Infused Peach Rings! Get your gummies today and use the promo code “SUMMER15” to receive 15% off of your purchase!
  • H:
    • Hemp (Hemp Plant, Hemp Seed, Hemp Extract): Holy hemp! Hemp plant is the male cannabis that CBD is derived from. Hemp extract is another way of saying hemp-derived CBD oil, which is legalized in the U.S. so long as it’s THC content is 0.3% or less, among other regulations. Not to obe confused with CBD/CBD oil, hemp seed/hemp seed oil comes from the seeds of the hemp plant, where there is hardly any CBD content and an abundance of fatty acids, nutrients, and bioactive compounds. Hemp seed is most commonly used as a supplement or ingredient to use when cooking.
    • I:
      • Isolate CBD: CBD isolate is the purest form of CBD because it is extracted without any of the cannabinoids and other compounds found in the hemp plant. In other words, the CBD molecule is isolated, which means that this form of CBD would not provide the entourage effect that is experienced from whole plant CBD. Seabedee offers several CBD isolate products, including our tasty CBD Infused Peach Rings, which are 100% THC-free!
  • J:
    • Joint (CBD): Hemp joints are pre-rolls that look like mini marijuana pre-rolls, but minus the marijuana. Despite how similar a CBD joint may taste and look to a marijuana joint, it will not make you high because it only contains hemp flower.
