Can you carry CBD oil in an airplane

CBD is now all in the rage in the world of wellness. Maybe you have even looked into its many benefits and bought a bottle of CBD oil or a CBD-infused product for yourself. Now, a new question arises. When travelling via airplanes, is it possible to carry these CBD products with you? In this article, we attempt to shed some light on this topic.

What is CBD

Cannabidiol, or CBD, as it is commonly referred to, is a naturally occurring non-psychoactive chemical compound found in the cannabis plant. CBD is used in a wide variety of products to give the sensation of relaxation and calm. Many people associate cannabis with stoner culture and getting high. However, the psychoactive element of cannabis which causes this high sensation is called tetrahydrocannabinol (or THC). Therefore, a big difference between THC and CBD is: THC gets you high, CBD doesn’t. Cannabis plants are of two types: marijuana and hemp. While marijuana is high in THC content, hemp is high in CBD content and has virtually no THC content.

The federal regulations surrounding CBD and CBD products specify that it must a) be derived only from hemp and b) have no more than 0.3% THC content.

Carrying CBD on planes

Until last year, the TSA stance regarding CBD or any cannabis-based product on planes was clear: they were not permitted. However, earlier in 2019, things changed. You can even verify this change on their page. Now, CBD oil CAN be carried on planes, provided they meet some specific requirements. There still seems to be some confusion surrounding those requirements.

In essence, if the product is FDA-approved (like Epidiolex, a medicine used to treat a specific kind of epilepsy in children) or meets federal regulations (obtained from hemp and has less than 0.3% THC content), then it is okay to carry the CBD product on planes.

Of course, there is the conundrum of how TSA officials are to identify THC content at the airport. But, if your product is from a good brand with a clear label indicating its contents, it should be easy to tell that your product complies with federal regulations.
