CBD has taken the world of wellness by storm. A wide range of products, from topical creams and oils to gummy bears, have hit the market. People are either using it for various medical issues or have heard about the benefits in their social circle. It has been touted with numerous benefits and seems to be an all-round for cure for nearly everything. But as we very well know, we should not believe everything the internet says. In this article, we dive into some research and give scientific uses of CBD.
Cannabidiol, known by its more popular abbreviated term, CBD, is the name of a cannabinoid. It occurs naturally in the cannabis plant. Although, CBD faces some amount of criticism owing to the fact that it originates from the cannabis plant, which is commonly associated with the mind-altering effect of ‘getting high’. However, CBD is not a psychoactive element and does not cause this feeling. The cannabinoid responsible for that is tetrahydrocannabinol, known as THC.
There are two main plants in the cannabis family: marijuana and hemp. While marijuana is high in THC content, hemp has negligible THC content and prominent amount of CBD content. This is the reason the industry standard for the extraction of CBD for Farm Bill was approved.
Here we detail with five ways through which CBD can help you with proper research as the base.
In 2018, the study “Effectiveness of Raw, Natural Medical Cannabis Flower for Treating Insomnia under Naturalistic Conditions” was published in the journal Medicines. This study involved 490 people with insomnia. After being treated with a combination of CBD and THC, the participants reported their symptoms of insomnia to have improved greatly. They had started by rating their symptoms on a scale of one to ten (one being least severe, ten being the most severe). At the outset, the average severity was 6.6. However, after the use of cannabis, the average came down to 2.2.
CBD can reduce anxiety because it mediates gamma-aminobutyric acid (or GABA). GABA is a chemical that occurs naturally in the brain. It is responsible for slowing neurons down or getting them to stop firing. It induces calmness in the nervous system, helps with sleep, helps relax the muscles, and reduces anxiety.
In 2019, a case study entitled “Cannabidiol in Anxiety and Sleep: A Large Case Series”, published in The Permanente Journal, reported the case of 103 adults. Self-reported anxiety was reduced with the introduction of CBD. Within the first month of the observation period, the anxiety levels had come down. The anxiety levels continued to stay low for the remaining two months of the observation period.
There are some CBD products that are meant for topical application, like creams and oils. CBD is useful in treating skin conditions such as eczema. The National Eczema Association referred to a human trial that included patients with atopic dermatitis. With the use of an endocannabinoid cream, the participants reported reduction in the severity of the itch and an improvement in the quality of sleep. Further quoting the National Eczema Association: “Twenty percent of subjects were able to stop their topical immunomodulators, 38 percent ceased using their oral antihistamines, and 33.6 percent no longer felt the need to maintain their topical steroid regimen by the end of the study.”
CBD can help reduce inflammation. In 2018, researchers reported that CBD could enable the reduction of inflammation and therefore help with pain and mobility in those patients who have multiple sclerosis. In the conclusion, the authors wrote: “[CBD] is anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, antiemetic, antipsychotic, and neuroprotective.”
Apart from this, a report published after studying over twenty-four thousand medical journal articles and ten thousand research abstracts about cannabinoids concluded that randomized controlled trials have provided strong evidence to conclude that cannabis can treat chronic pain.
The first FDA-approved CBD is Epidiolex, which is an oral solution. It is used to treat seizures related to a specific kind of epilepsy: Lennox Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome. Being able to mitigate these symptoms is possibly the most promising advantage of CBD. It especially helps children living with the Dravet Syndrome.
